Nathan Reiley Nathan Reiley, 83, ESCONDIDO -- Nathan Reiley died Monday, May 17, 2011 at his home in Escondido, California. Originally from Michigan, he moved his family to California in 1963, where he lived in Monrovia and Arcadia for 40 years. He moved to Escondido eight years ago and was active in the Knights of Columbus of Resurrection Council 9897 and the Church of the Resurrection. He was a past Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus in Escondido. He is survived by his children, Linda Kelly, Patrick Reiley, and Beverley Reiley; grandchildren, Erika Vallecorsa, Erin Houseman, and Ashley Reiley; great-grandchildren, Logan and Matthew Vallecorsa, and Micah Houseman. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 27, at the Church of the Resurrection in Escondido. He will be interred at the Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery with a short graveside service. Major Earl Robert Gimpel Major Earl Robert Gimpel, USMC, (Ret.) ESCONDIDO -- Earl Robert Gimpel passed away at home on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 under the care of Odyssey Hospice. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who always had a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin on his face. Earl was born in St. Louis, Mo., on November 17, 1921 to Earl H. and Anna Gimpel. As a teenager, he helped out his parents neighborhood grocery store where he learned to be a butcher. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on January 15, 1942. He said, "it had the shortest line!" After boot camp, he shipped to Guadalcanal where he spent six grueling months of starvation and had hand to hand combat. Upon the end of his duty, he returned to St. Louis and worked at a meat packing house. He married his first wife in 1949 and moved to Pacific Beach, Calif. Because of the Korean Conflict, he re-enlisted in the Marine Corps and was sent to Quantico, Va., for a year and then sent to San Diego for officer training. In 1955, he bought an acre in Escondido and had his house built in 1959 where he and his wife raised two daughters. He worked for AAA as an Insurance Agent and then joined San Diego Gas & Electric. He started as a ditch digger and worked his way up the management ladder to become an engineer, and then ultimately as the North County Area Community Manager. He held the position of President for the Oceanside Kiwanis and Poway Rotary organizations. Although Earl retired in 1986 after 30 years of service, he remained active in Escondido. He was an Ambassador of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, a Paul Harris Fellow in the Escondido Rotary, a Fourth Degree member in the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion, and the North County Military Officers Association. He held several part-time jobs delivering flowers for Rosemary's Florist and McLeod Mortuary, plus he and his second wife, Marlene, had a catering business.

Earl is survived by his wife, Marlene; his sister, Jane Lettich of Florida; his two daughters, Barbara Nimesgern and son-in-law, Jimmy who reside in Arizona, and Catherine Dendy and son-in-law, Greg of Valley Center, Calif.; grandchildren, Jason Michael, Ryan Dendy, Kristen Dendy, Sean Dendy, Brandon Dendy, Jordan Dendy, and Dustin Dendy; and stepchildren, Debbie Mahoney of Florida, Michael Donovan of Temecula, Calif., and Kevin Donovan of San Diego. Viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m., with a Mass being celebrated at 10 a.m., on Friday, January 28, at Resurrection Church, 1445 Conway Dr., Escondido. Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Odyssey Hospice or a local hospice of your choice. The family would also like to thank the staff of Odyssey Hospice for their care and kindness.

Leo Joseph Brewster

Leo Joseph Brewster

Leo Joseph Brewster, 89 ESCONDIDO -- Leo Joseph Brewster passed away on Friday, December 10, 2010 at the age of 89. In heaven he joins his wife Millie, who passed away 50 days earlier. Leo was born in Dayton, Ohio, on March 8, 1921, the sixth of eight children to Murrel Brewster and Emma Carolina Kurtz. Leo was educated in Dayton, Ohio, and graduated from the American Institute of Banking. He worked in the banking profession for almost 20 years, and in 1954, served as President of the Dayton Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. In 1945, he founded, and was the first President of, the Catholic Youth Club in Dayton. Eight years later on September 26, 1953, he married Mildred Pekarcik of Youngstown, Ohio, at St. Joseph Church in Dayton. Leo, Millie, and daughter, Amy, moved to Glendale, California in 1960 where they joined the Church of the Incarnation. Leo was active on many Church committees, but especially enjoyed helping count the collection and running weekly bingo. He was also very involved with the Glendale Council #1920 of the Knights of Columbus and was the Grand Knight of the Council in 1982. During their time in Glendale, Leo worked as an associate with the J.W. Robinson department store. In 1995, Leo and Millie moved to Escondido to be closer to their grandchildren. Leo was an active member of The Church of St. Timothy, Knights of Columbus, the International Order of the Alhambra, and spent many hours on family genealogy.

Leo is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amy Brewster and Jeff Parrott, formerly of Poway but now of San Diego; granddaughters, Laura, Kate and Michelle Parrott; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21 at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary in Escondido with the Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22 at The Church of St. Timothy in Escondido. The Committal will follow at 3 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Leo's memory to the Alhambra Charity Fund, 4200 Leeds Ave., Baltimore, MD 91229-5496.

Joseph John Doering

Joseph John Doering, ESCONDIDO -- Joseph John Doering passed away quickly after collapsing at a National Tax Seminar in Las Vegas, Nevada, that he attended each year. He had a massive brain aneurysm and his guardian angel rushed him to the hospital. Joe died at 4:37pm on December 2, 2010. He was of German /Scottish-Irish heritage and born in Detroit, Michigan on February 18, 1928. Before too long, his family moved to Rock Island, Illinois, where he would spend his whole adolescent life. Joe was the middle child of three, and always was hard at work to make money for his family at a very young age. Chemistry, Numbers, Mathematics, and Aviation were his big loves in his work life and these would later consume his whole life. Joe served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. during WW II. He met his wife, Vivian Nellie Velichkoff, at a college chemistry class. Since Joe knew all the answers and Vivian needed help, they worked together. With the permission of her mother, Joe married Vivian in 1950 and together raised six children. Joe had many jobs in the Aviation Field- McDonnell Douglas; General Dynamics; and Teledyne-Ryan in San Diego, California. Before getting his pension, Teledyne-Ryan laid off many employees and Joe was one of them. It was at this time that he started his own tax preparation company, Doering Diversified, LTD (DDL). Joe really enjoyed doing personal income taxes and corporation income taxes. Joe had a vast love for family, music, animals, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Mary's Catholic Church. He loved when his granddaughter, Jennifer, came over to visit. Joe had a couple of favorite nicknames: "Tomahawk Joe" and "The Pathfinder," plus there was not a dessert he could not devour ~ dark chocolate was his favorite. Joe was a kind loving husband, generous father, and a good friend to all.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years of marriage, Vivian; and by his children and families, Kathleen Sullivan-Doering and Richard Sullivan of Honolulu, HI; Stephen, Lorraine and Jennifer Doering of Carlsbad, Calif.; George and JoEllen Doering of Los Angeles, Calif.; Susan Doering and Dieter Wulfhorst of Auberry, Calif.; and Michael and Mark Doering of Escondido, Calif. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Doering of Illinois; and sister, Cyrilla Meier of California.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, 225 S. Broadway in Escondido. The Rosary will be at 7 p.m. with music performed by family members prior to the Rosary from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1160 South Broadway in Escondido, with the Committal to follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. A reception in Joe's honor will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Escondido following the Committal. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Joe's name to the "Parish Hall Building Fund" c/o St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1160 South Broadway, Escondido, Calif. 92025. Arrangements are by Alhiser-Comer Mortuary.
